The BGA was created jointly by GSABC (Group Services for America's Blood Centers) andBCA (Blood Centers of America) to better provide services to their members.

Here's an excerpt from GSABC's notice to Symbology, Inc. from Steve McCormick, Chair - BGA Vendor Qualification Committee; "GSABC has joined forces with Blood Centers of America (BCA) to create BGA, a cooperative that offers specific programs and services, eliminates some overlap between our organizations and serves the best interests of our members. One of the programs offered to our BGA members is vendor qualification.

"After a very thorough review of your self assessment form, quality plan, and a survey of the BGA member blood centers by the Vendor Qualification Committee, we have renewed your status as a qualified vendor for 'blood product and unit number labels'. Congratulations on this accomplishment."

Blood industry barcode labels must meet strict requirements regarding material safety. Additionally, there are complex medical identification guidelines regarding size, design, numbering, etc. to which blood bag labels must conform.
